Anti-Virus & Spyware Updates
Both Symantec and MacAfee have recently released updated versions of their Antivirus packages. So what has changed and why is it important to update to the new releases?
Symantec Endpoint Protection 11
Comcity Technology has been testing the new version since its initial release
(MR0) and now with the recent updated version (MR2) will be contacting clients
to update over the coming months.
So why update to the new version?
Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 combines Symantec AntiVirus with advanced threat
prevention to deliver unmatched defence against malware for laptops, desktops and
servers. It seamlessly integrates essential security technologies in a single agent
and management console, increasing protection and helping lower total cost of ownership.
Testing has shown that the new version also fixes many of the long standing issues clients
have seen with the version 9 & 10 releases. Along with this independent testing showing
that the client systems running version 11 operate faster than the previous versions.
Version 11 is also the first version to fully implement spyware and root kit detection
which has been one of the biggest issues over the last two years.
McAfee EPO 4.0 & VirusScan 8.5.0i
McAfee also has released new versions of the Management Console (EPO) and the Virus
and Spyware software (VirusScan 8.5.0i). With the recent Service Packs an upgrade to
this new release is highly recommended.
So why update to the new version?
The new version includes a new engine that means less downloads from the internet
when updating, scanning for root kits and protection levels allow you to control
how it affects the speed of the client.
It is important to note that while older versions of Antivirus software will update
virus definitions from the vendors they will only scan for the types of issues
the version of the software was originally written to protect. Over time new types
of issues are found and in many cases only upgrading to a new version of the product
which has been updated to scan for these new types of threats will enable a company
to continue to protect itself from these new types of threats.
